Wuthering Waves - 22/06/2026

556 words.

God is not knowable. Phoebe has been feeling a little restricted in the Order lately.

Author's note:
it is my life mission on earth to make feminine characters nonbinary
I am atheist so idk much about faith but Phoebe's depiction is very interesting to me and I wanted to tie that into this introspection :) Hope you enjoy!
Here "Rover" is used as a title instead of a name, hence "the Rover".

_______

Phoebe had always adored the Sentinel Imperator. Their love drove every single of her actions and echoed in each of her thoughts. They were the model she could never pretend to emulate, but always strive to reach. Be kind, help your fellow humanity, those were the commandments she held dear, Their message carried within her heart.

Phoebe had never given much thought to herself beyond whether she was living true to Their message.

She would have spent her life without any other doubt, if it hadn’t been for the Rover.

The Rover came and although they were so different, they fought for the Sentinel, to protect Rinascita the Imperator had birthed from the sea. It was clear to Phoebe that the new Laureate did not possess the same faith in the Imperator as she did. And yet, they did abide by Their word. Surely this meeting was the Sentinel’s will.

Therefore Phoebe had followed the Rover in their adventures across Rinascita. Far away from the Order’s cathedral, she had witnessed so many different people, creatures, and sights. The world truly was filled with the Imperator’s love, and it was vast.

And she had realised that she had been feeling a little restricted back in Ragunna. Not by the Imperator’s teachings, but by her own mind.

Phoebe’s name had been gifted to her from the mouth of the Primus when she had been accepted into the Order. It had been the Sentinel’s blessing and she was grateful for it. Whenever she heard it, it reflected her oath to the Sentinel. That wasn’t it.

Around the campfire, the Rover’s companions called the hero “they”. It sounded wholly different from the Imperator’s. Until then, Phoebe had believed that only divinity was free from humanity’s determined binary. It was restrictive to put God in a box, and so humanity who didn’t pretend to understand God had constructed a word to recognise Their unknowable Self. To hear a human be referred to by the same word, had troubled her at first.

The Fools’ Troupe in particular were fond of their play on words, moving and toying with language as if lightly sauntering from cloud to cloud. When the captain Brant and his crew mates mentioned the Rover, the word rolled so naturally off their tongues: like it could be easy, like it made sense.

As the clouds of confusion were parted by the rays of sun, it became clear to Phoebe that her trouble wasn’t all coming from a perceived blasphemy. Just like the Rover’s existence, that word contained a vastness that made her dizzy. The more she listened to the Fools’ stories, the more of the world the Rover showed her and unknown lands she travelled alongside them, the more restless she grew.

She was feeling suffocated under the collar of the Order’s robe. The word used to define her had become too small.

Was it wrong to desire that unknown? Phoebe had prayed often and silently to the Sentinel.

A dream came of a golden light shining behind Phoebe’s every step, as if gently pushing forward on the unlit path. Phoebe had felt a serene, calming presence then.

The Sentinel was unknowable and words were human. The Sentinel had given humanity tools to define themselves.

Phoebe’s name was the Imperator’s gift, and the unknown was for Phoebe to explore.

My phoebeeeeee
I am fascinated by the idea of Ain Sof in jewish mysticism, that you can only speak of G-d in negatives because G-d is beyond any understanding: you cannot say "G-d is great", because "great" is a limited human understanding, but you can say "G-d is not small". Thus God is not knowable, and it inspired this framing for Phoebe's self-exploration! You could say Phoebe's and my gender is "not a woman, not a man" :)
